In 1928, engineer Angelo Cetto,
who two years earlier arrived in Tijuana from his
native Italy, founded a wine-bottling business and
named it Bodegas Cetto. After Prohibition, he promptly
purchased the property where the office an bottling
facility were located, ensuring a centralized urban
facility which remains their headquarters today.
In 1945 Angelo's eldest son, Luis Ferruccio, began
exporting fortified and table wines to Mexico City.
By the fifties the Cettos were looking to the Valle
de Guadalupe as a further source of grapes, and
in 1957 changed their name to Productos de Uva,
S.A. de C.V. In 1960 the Cetto family acquired their
first 250 acres in the Valley. This was followed
in 1968 by the purchase near Tecate of the El Escondido
Ranch, with 180 acres of dry-farmed Zinfandel vines.
This vineyard had been planted in 1930 with cuttings
imported from the Escondido area of Southern California.
After 1970, the properties became the sole ownership
of Luis Agostin Cetto, Don Angelo's son, who continued
to acquire land and plant new vineyards, finally
founding L.A. Cetto in 1974. |
