Winemaker Hans Backhoff earned
his doctor's degree in food science from the University
of Nottingham, England. After returning to Ensenada,
where he had lived as a youth, Backhoff worked for
a while in the food industry as a chemist. During
this time he developed a local reputation as an
accomplished amateur wine maker.
In 1987 a group of investors, including Hans, decided
to start a small winery that would produce a limited
quantity of premium wines, with Backhoff as a partner
and winemaker. While visiting the Valle de Guadalupe,
they found what they believed was the ideal site.
Thus, 175 acres of vineyard land were purchased,
located on the north side of the valley, near to
the eastern end, just beyond the village of Francisco
Zarco.
Because of their belief that Bordeaux varieties
express the character of this land with refinement
and distinction, the partners chose to focus their
attention on making premium Bordeaux-type red and
white wines. In addition, because of the success
of Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay in the valley, these
varieties were included. |
